What Progress Looks Like in the First 90 Days

Welcome to Week 2! You’re just getting started, and this is an important time in your music journey. Many families wonder, “How do I know if my student is progressing?” or “What should we expect at this stage?”
We’ve put together a short video to answer those questions and give you a clear picture of what early success looks like—and how we support you along the way.

Click below to watch a short message from Paul about the early stages of piano learning and what to expect.
✅ Key Early Milestones to Look For

Here are some small wins that show your student is building a strong foundation:
  • Sitting down at the piano more willingly
  • Recognizing where certain notes are on the keyboard
  • Singing or humming lesson songs at home
  • Tapping rhythms or finger patterns they’ve learned
  • Trying to teach someone else (even if they don’t get it exactly right!)
  • Playing short pieces with less hesitation
These are signs that music is becoming part of their thinking, not just something they do once a week.

🎯 What If It Feels Slow or Hard?

Around weeks 3–6, it’s common for students to hit a plateau. That might look like:
  • Struggling with coordination between two hands
  • Feeling bored or discouraged
  • Saying “I forgot how to play that”
  • Slower progress with new pieces
This is all normal. Learning isn’t always a straight line—and sometimes the biggest growth comes right after a frustrating week.
