Helping Your Child Succeed in Music: 10 Easy Ways to Support Practice at Home
- Let Them Be the Teacher
Ask your child to “teach” you what they learned this week. Teaching builds confidence and helps them reinforce skills. - Use a Practice Tracker
Stickers, stars, or checkmarks—track each day they practice. Small rewards after a full row make it motivating. - Keep Practice Short
Two short 5–10 minute bursts work better than one long session. It keeps things focused and fun. - End on a High Note
Finish with something they love—a fun song, a confident section, or even improv. - Celebrate Specifically
Instead of “Good job,” try:- “You really stayed focused today.”
- “You fixed that tricky part!”
- “That rhythm was so steady.”
- Make a Practice Jar
Fill a jar with fun prompts:- “Play like a robot.”
- “Pretend it’s a concert.”
- “Play it with your eyes closed!”
- Set a Practice Routine
Pick a regular time (after dinner, before bed) and keep it consistent. Just like brushing teeth—it’s part of the day. - Host Mini Performances
Let them “perform” once a week at home—just one short piece. Applaud, record it, and celebrate! - Let Them Pick a Goal Song
Ask what song they’d love to learn—part of a movie theme, a pop tune, something silly. Then help them work toward it. - Track Their Growth
Take a video once a month so they can see how far they’ve come. That visual feedback builds pride and momentum.
